Basho, Pen name of Matsuo Munefusa 1644-1694.
Japanese poet who was a master of the haiku,
a 17-syllable poetic form with lines of 5, 7,
and 5 syllables, which he infused with subtle
allusiveness and made the accepted form of
poetic expression in Japan. His most famous
work is Oku-no-hosomichi/The Narrow Road to
the Deep North 1694, an account of a visit to
northern Japan, which consists of haikus
interspersed with prose passages.
